Abstract

Records of 52 cetacean sightings made around the port of Pisagua, northern Chile, are presented. The sightings amounted to 1066 individuals and included false killer whales (Pseudorca crassidens), Risso´s dolphins (Grampus griseus), dusky dolphins (Lagenorhynchus obscurus), bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), Burmeister´s porpoises (Phocoena spinipinnis), humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) and fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus). The most abundant species were T. truncatus (39.5%) and L. obscurus (46.7%), species that were also the most frequently sighted (38.5% and 32.7% respectively). L. obscurus was present throughout the year (2014-22 period) and T. truncatus 77.8% (7 of 8 years; 2014-22 period). 81.8% of the individuals presented feeding activities, behavior apparently related to the presence of coastal upwelling and high productivity of the area. Within the study area (19°20'02''S-19°37'24''S) the Bahía Pisagua sector (19°35'00'S/70°13'13''W) gathered 50.7 % of sighted individuals, 49.3% of T. truncatus and 59.7% of L. obscurus observed during the study. Other species showed values ??lower than 10% of the total specimens studied.
